THIEVES! THIEVES! AND MORE THIEVES! 13.4

The Unifying Theory: Plate Tectonics

Seafloor Spreading and Continental Drift Combine:
In 1965, geophysicists John Tuzo Wilson and Fred Vine, along with geologists Henry Hess, introduced a new theory.
-What two theories does the theory of plate tectonics unite?
The two theories that unite plate tectonics are continental drift and seafloor spreading.

-What happens at a transform boundary?
Two plates slide past each other.

Transform boundary- where two plates slide past each other.
Divergent boundary- where two plates are moving apart.
Convergent boundary- two plates are pushed together.
Subducted- one oceanic plate is pushed under the other.

Hot Spots:
Besides contributing to the plate tectonic plate theory, J. Tuzo Wilson also proposed the hot spot theory in 1963.
-What is the hot spot theory?
The hot spot theory is hot spots are small melting areas within this mantle where thermal plumes cause magma columns to push up intensely, breaking through the crust.

Plate Movement:
As you read earlier, the theory of continental drift wasn't accepted early in its conception because no one could explain how continents could move.
-What forces do scientists think cause tectonic plates to move?
Convection and seafloor spreading are forces that scientist think cause plates to move.
-What changes will occur to the oceans and the continents over the next millions of years?
The Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean will expand while the Pacific Ocean will shrink.
Austria will continue to drift toward Eurasia. Southern California will pass San Francisco as it moves to the northwest, and a new ocean will form in the East African rift valley. The Mediterranean Sea will close as Africa moves northward.

____________________ was not accepted at first because it was not explained by anyone.

The two theories that unite plate tectonics are ______________ and _________________

Summary:
Continental Drift and Seafloor Spreading Combined explained a lot about plates moving and creating new places. Many different boundaries created new places in the world today. Such as San Andreas Fault in California. The San Andreas Fault was created by transform boundary which is two plates sliding pass each other. Also the seafloor getting wider was caused by divergent boundary. This occurs when two plates are moving apart. Magma splits through the rift valley which makes new crust and the sea spreads.

Hot Spots briefly explained what they are. Proposed by John Tuzo Wilson he proposed that the hot spots were small melting areas where magma columns push up intensely what we call volcanoes basically. Hot spots do not move with tectonic plates they start in the Earth's mantle. Hot Spots are mainly located in the Hawaiian Islands.

Plate Movement shows that there are different forces that cause tectonic plates to move. These forces are Convection and Seafloor spreading. Convection being a vertical circulation pattern that can be a gas or liquid and caused by hot material coming up and cold material becoming smaller. Scientist predicted that in the next million years a lot of changing in the world will happen. These changes being cause mainly by plate movement.
